The Trudeau government has released a survey on electoral reform that is far from perfect. Postcards linking you to the survey at mydemocracy.ca are being delivered now. Despite the survey’s flaws, it is important to fill it out. We cannot let the Trudeau government claim that a low response rate means voters don’t care. We need to show that voters do care, a lot.
The biggest problem with the survey is that it never asks if you want proportional representation, which Unifor members endorsed last summer, and instead focuses on “values.” Fortunately, there are a couple of things you can do to show that you value Proportional Representation.
Fair Vote Canada developed a guide to filling out the survey to show support for proportional representation. Unifor has summarized it here. Use this guide, and fill out the survey. The full Fair Vote guide showing how it came up with the answers is here.
Take the postcard you received, and write a short message on the back telling Justin Trudeau “I Support Proportional Representation. Do the Right Thing”, and mail it back to him at: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, House of Commons, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0A6. No postage required. Before mailing it, take a photo and post it to Twitter and/or Facebook, with the hashtag #ERRE.
With these tools, you can show the Trudeau government that proportional representation is important to you. For more information, go to unifor.org/electoralreform.
