BIWOC – Black, Indigenous, Workers of Colour

Tears to Hope Relay

This year, Unifor will once again participate in the Tears to Hope Relay. This fundraising initiative supports Tears to Hope Society, an Indigenous-led organization primarily focused on supporting the families and loved ones of MMIWG2S, raising awareness, and promoting prevention.

We will be walking at T.B. McQueenston park at 1:00 p.m. on October 5th.

When the walk is done everyone is invited back to our Hall at 86 Hester Street.  Pizza and pop will be provided.

If you are able to fill out the below form before August 30th we will be able to ensure we have t-shirts in your size for you.  After August 30th RSVPs are welcome so we have an idea of numbers for food.

If you have any questions please reach out to Emily Heikoop at emily.heikoop@unifor5555.ca.

Unifor 5555 Black, Indigenous and Workers of Colour Mandate

Despite the tremendous support our union offers the Black, Indigenous and Workers of Colour (BIWOC) community, the struggles are not always readily showcased.  Hence, the BIWOC committee has a mandate to be a support group for everyone who identifies as BIWOC.

Mission

  • Be the bridge that readily connects the BIWOC community at McMaster University to the Union that works for them.
  • Intentional representation of Unifor 5555 BIWOC members at the local and national levels.
  • Work out ways to navigate the issues and concerns of the BIWOC within McMaster University
  • Organize events to empower every BIWOC at McMaster University and create a safe space for collective support and expression of issues and concerns.
  • Communicate and raise awareness of the unique challenges faced by BIWOC members.

Objective

  • To understand the experiences of the BIWOC community and to be as supportive as possible in collaboration with Unifor Local 5555.
