Unifor National Statement on Trans Day of Visibility

Posted in Unifor 5555

On Trans Day of Visibility, March 31, Unifor stands firmly with trans, non-binary, two-spirited, and gender-diverse individuals.

In the face of mounting hate, fueled by far-right rhetoric and emboldened by politicians who choose to sow division and hatred instead of fostering unity, our union remains unwavering in its commitment to justice, equality, and solidarity.

Trans rights under attack

Across Canada and the United States, workers are challenging an alarming surge in legislative attacks on gender identity and education, targeting the rights and dignity of trans people.

The U.S. federal government has enacted policies that erase legal recognition of transgender identities, reinstated bans on transgender military service, and supported state-level efforts to restrict transgender rights in healthcare, education, and public life.

In Alberta, Premier Smith limited the rights, freedoms and medical care of trans youth and their families.

We must push forward for a future where all of us are treated with respect and are free to express our identity and seek out medical care without government intervention.

With a federal election underway, Unifor calls on all politicians to take a clear stand against transphobia, commit to protecting gender-diverse individuals, and reject any policies that fuel hate and misinformation about trans people.

An attack on one is an attack on all

The rise of transphobia is a threat to the principles of equity and freedom that underpin all workers’ rights.

History has shown that those seeking power target the most vulnerable first, to try to break up the solidarity that binds working people together. We cannot allow this to happen.

A call to action

Unifor members must stand against transphobia in our workplaces, our communities, and our union. Every voice raised in solidarity strengthens the fight for a society where trans people are not only visible but are welcomed, embraced, and have a true sense of belonging and community.

For those looking for more information, Unifor’s self-directed Allies course is available to all members. Being an ally is more than just a label—it’s an ongoing commitment to understanding, support, and action.

We will not stop until every trans person lives free from discrimination, fear, and violence, with full rights, dignity, and respect in their workplace and community.

We recognize the resilience, contributions, and leadership of trans, non-binary, and two-spirit members who continue to enrich our movement. Their courage and advocacy are a reminder that visibility is both a powerful act of resistance and a beacon of hope.

Our union will continue to push for inclusive policies, equitable workplaces, and comprehensive protections for trans people.

Today, and every day, Unifor affirms that trans rights are human rights. We stand in unwavering solidarity with all trans people and are committed to building a world where everyone can live, work, and thrive in dignity and safe.

Stay Tuned: Unifor’s Workers in Transition Guide Relaunch

For many years, Unifor’s original “Workers in Transition” guide served as a comprehensive resource for union representatives to support trans members coming out in or entering Unifor workplaces.

The union has reviewed the guide, and an updated version will be available to all local representatives and members to download and order copies ahead of the May 17 International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
